There have been many moments throughout my life that I wondered why God loves me.

I’ve failed myself, so I wondered how I possibly didn’t disappoint the one who matters most.

Between sin and suffering, God’s love has come into question.

Sparing you the details of my shortcomings and pitfalls, I can tell you that I pretty much lost count of my sins, some of which I’ve tried hard to forget.

That’s sin for you, though—sin muddles our view of God, and when our view is obscured, we start to question how and why God’s love for us is everlasting.

Not only that, but I’ve experienced a great deal of tragedy, too, sometimes making me question if God actually loves me.

Between sin and suffering, God’s love has come into question.

The how and why of God’s unfailing love for us may seem hard to decipher, but to Christ, the reason is quite simple—God knows the truth about who He created, He created us in His likeness and He makes no mistakes.

We are cherished by Him, no matter what, but the enemy works hard to convince us otherwise and does everything in his power to plant seeds of doubt. When we fall short and feel unworthy of forgiveness, God reminds us in Ephesians 2:4-5 that His forgiveness is ready for us to accept with open arms: “But God is so rich in mercy, and He loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, He gave us life when He raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)”

Our sins may bring us feelings of shame, disappointment and even disbelief, but God knows our faults. In fact, our shortcomings come as no surprise to Him. Remember, He purposefully created every one of us, down to the last detail. “The very hairs of your head are all numbered!” (Luke 12:7). So, when we wonder why He loves us, God wonders, “why not?”

God thoughtfully reminds us of His “why” throughout the Bible, and He spares no detail or explanation regarding His love without fail.

Two verses, in particular, bring an unexplainable peace and joy to my heart, causing me to fall to my knees and repent for wondering why He loves me. Despite the pain in my life or the sins that have brought me shame, Romans 8:38-39 provides the reminder I need that His love isn’t going anywhere: “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

God knows the truth about who He created, He created us in His likeness and He makes no mistakes.

God loves you and chose to save you, not based on your financial status or talents, but because you are you, and He created you with purpose. He gave His only son to die for our sins, and that measure of love is infinite.

No matter what the enemy tries to convince you of, God will never stop loving you. There may be times you feel forgotten, unforgiven or plagued with doubt, but you must “be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord” (Psalm 27:14). He will never forget you, He will always have a plan for you and He will love you every step of the way.
