Don’t Miss Stephen Colbert and ‘Insecure’s’ Yvonne Orji Talk All Things Faith and Holy Spirit

It's not often that Late Night talk shows go all in when the subject of faith comes up. But that's exactly what Stephen Colbert did during his interview of Yvonne Orji of HBO's "Insecure."

Stephen Colbert is often transparent about his Chrisitan faith, but it’s not every day that his interviews—or any interviews on the Late Night talk show circuit for that matter—dig deep into the merits of the Trinity and in particular Holy Spirit’s ability to give really sound career advice with the same level of slap-stick comedy Yvonne Orji of HBO’s “Insecure” is known for. But that’s exactly what happened and we are just as excited about it as Colbert was.

It began when Yvonne Orji was sharing her journey from being med school bound to reigning HBO star:

“I prayed—I’d been a Christian since like Freshman year of college and I was like, ‘God I need help.‘ And loud as day, I heard Holy Spirit say, ‘Do comedy.'”

Stunned, Colbert interjected, “Wait, the Holy Spirit…the Dove came to you and said, ‘Do comedy?'”

Visibly intrigued, Colbert goes on to drill down into exactly when, how and in what measure Orji heard Holy Spirit’s voice.

“I like hearing that because I’m a Christian as well and there’s not a lot of Jesus laughing in the Bible.”

Orji replied, “He’s hysterical though!”

“But it says, ‘Jesus wept,’ it never said, ‘Jesus chuckled.'”

And that’s just the thing, Colbert is correct but also incorrect, as Orji proves by showing us all just how much God likes to get in on the joke, “Well you know, at the point to which He’s turning water into wine though you gotta know it’s like, ‘Ahhhh, we’re all out of wine.’ And He’s like, ‘watch this.'”
