Football season is upon us and we’re thrilled to have more Russell Wilson in our lives. The Seattle Seahawks quarterback is a remarkable athlete, but what we admire most is his character and faith. So, even if the Seahawks will never be your team, we suspect that you’ll be on board to at least cheer Wilson on.
A Remarkable Athlete
In 2012, Russell Wilson was signed on to the Seahawks and played a key role in their incredible success in the years that followed. He helped lead the team to a remarkable Super Bowl victory over the Denver Broncos in 2014 and they returned to the Super Bowl in 2015, narrowly losing to the New England Patriots.
The Seahawks know that Wilson is vital to the team’s success, and they’ve made that clear in his compensation package. In fact, as of April 2019, Wilson signed a four-year $140 million contract with the Seahawks making him the highest-paid NFL player.
A Man of Faith
Russell Wilson is remarkably authentic about his faith in Christ, in fact, his Twitter bio boldly states, “I want to Love like Jesus!” He regularly posts Bible verses on Twitter to his 5.4 million followers. He attends City Church led Judah Smith, alongside celebrities like Justin Bieber.
He speaks often about his faith. “In terms of my legacy off the field, I want to be a Christian man that helps lead and helps change lives and helps serve other people…. In terms of my faith, my faith is everything: God comes first, family and friends come second, and football comes third.”
He’s a Savvy Businessman
From the moment Wilson began his professional football career, he also began to invest in start-ups. Like many athletes, he’s endorsed brands in a wide array of advertisements, but when it came to business, Wilson proves to be far more than just a spokesman.
While many celebrities may engage in philanthropy once a year for a good photo op, Wilson believes that his charitable work should happen weekly!
He’s invested in diverse initiatives including VICIS football helmets, Molecule mattresses and a men’s apparel company called Good Man Brand. Beyond start-ups, he’s also invested in the business of professional sports. He’s working to bring a new basketball/hockey sports arena to Seattle. He’s also a part-owner of the Seattle Sounders and joined an effort to bring an MLB team to Portland, Oregon. With all these investments, we’re actually not sure when Wilson sleeps!
He’s Half of a Power-Couple
In 2015, Wilson began dating pop singer Ciara, which led to their stunning July 2016 wedding in Cheshire, England. They wasted no time building their family and welcomed their daughter Sienna just about 10 months after their wedding! Wilson also embraced the role of stepfather to Ciara’s son Future Zahir.
We love following both Wilson and Ciara’s social media posts. Each is so successful in their own right and when they share their family’s tender love with their followers, it inspires us to love our own families as tenderly.
A Lifestyle of Charity
Lastly, we are so impressed with Wilson’s remarkable commitment to give back. While many celebrities may engage in philanthropy once a year for a good photo op, Wilson believes that his charitable work should happen weekly! Every week, he visits Seattle Children’s Hospital, offering encouragement to the families impacted by the hospital.
He supports the troops stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. He hosts the Russell Wilson Football Academy, a youth football camp. He donates to help those impacted by diabetes. He fundraises for the Boys & Girls Club. And perhaps most impressive of all, he started the Why Not You Foundation which has donated over $1 million (and counting) to help fight children’s cancer in Seattle.
These efforts are remarkably generous, and his philanthropy doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
All football team loyalties aside, we can all agree that Russell Wilson is a remarkable role model. As an elite athlete, man of faith, entrepreneur, husband, father and philanthropist, Wilson is the full package.
