Photographer Phil Moore captured a heartbreaking photo of a park ranger comforting a gorilla. The gorilla lost its mother to poachers. This scene took place in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Patrick Karabaranga, photographed, is one of the park rangers in Virunga. The region has been affected by war and armed conflict for the past 20 years. The parks are guarded by a team of over 600 rangers.
The park accounts for a quarter of the world’s mountain gorilla population with over 200 mountain gorillas. The exceptional wildlife there is safeguarded intently since traffickers often attempt to smuggle animals out of the park.
Mass deforestation and the infrastructure transports that take up space in the rainforests have made the gorillas critically endangered. Wide conservation efforts have helped restore the gorilla population to a certain extent. But there is still more to be done. Learn more at https://virunga.org/.
