There are plenty of reasons to DIY a room spray, whether it’s because you can’t find a scent you like in the store, or because you simply want to begin using all natural ingredients in your home. Many sweet smelling sprays found in stores actually contain harmful ingredients that in turn, you inhale after use—but by using natural products, you can have a healthy environment that still smells great with this easy to make natural air freshener! Personally, I love the ability to completely customize a scent, so I know I can make different natural air fresheners as room sprays for the kitchen, the bedroom and the living room.

Supplies:

  • 8-ounce amber spray bottle (use glass because oils can break down plastic over time)
  • 4 ounces water
  • 4 ounces vodka
  • essential oils (I used grapefruit, eucalyptus and lavender, but the world is your oyster here—have fun experimenting with creative scents)

Directions:

  1. Fill half of the bottle with water (or, approximately 4 ounces for an 8-ounce bottle).
  2. Add 4 ounces of vodka. You can make this air freshener with less alcohol, but the vodka will help the scent to last longer and aid in mixing the oils and water.
  3. Add 80-100 drops of essential oils of your choice for an 8-ounce bottle. For this scent, I used 50 drops grapefruit, 40 drops eucalyptus and 10 drops lavender.
  4. That’s it! Easy, breezy. Make sure to shake the bottle before you spray it, so the oils and water can redistribute. The oils will naturally want to separate from the water.
  5. Use this natural air freshener scent anywhere for a fresh, clean smell.
