Meghan McCain, one-fifth of ABC’s The View, opened up recently to conservative personality Ben Shapiro about her husband’s faith and how his Christian convictions have steadied her during a season of intense loss.

“I need God to guide me a little bit right now,” she admitted to Shapiro.

In August 2018, the political commentator’s father, the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), passed away at 81-years-old after a lengthy battle against glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Just shy of one year later, in July of this year, the 35-year-old co-host announced she and her husband Ben Domenech, editor and co-founder of The Federalist, suffered a miscarriage.

It was in the midst of that great loss McCain knew she married the right man.

“I believe in God for a lot of different reasons, but Ben was 100 percent the right man for me through my life, right now, and the amount of tragedy I’ve had to go through,” McCain said, “because he’s just steady as a rock and he believes in God’s plan and he just always reminds me that we aren’t in control, He is.”

“I really do think God brought him to me for a reason,” she added.

Shapiro went on to ask McCain how, exactly, she would define her own faith. The political daughter said she grew up Baptist (Domenech is Anglican) and still attends church when she isn’t traveling. Most often, though, McCain said she feels God’s presence in nature.

During a recent trip to Wyoming with her husband, McCain said she woke up one early morning, pleading with God to give her a sign He was there for her. Later that day, she and Domenech went on a fishing trip, where they encountered a moose—something their guide said had never happened in his several years out on the water. That was the sign McCain prayed for.

“That’s the most obvious example of why I am a woman of faith,” she said. “I know it’s not always that simple, but there are reminders if you’re looking for them.”

While she reiterated the fact she’s always been “religious,” being married to Domenech, whom she said “can quote Scripture off the top of his head,” has deepened her faith in God.

“When my dad was originally diagnosed,” McCain recalled, “the first thing Ben did was, he was like, ‘We have to pray together now.’ He has been such an amazing influence on me in so many different ways. And my relationship with God, Ben has definitely helped strengthen.”
