When asked if he always knew that God was good, Kobe Bryant gave a true glimpse into the heart of a man who understood the grace, support and love that Christ promises is available to all.

As the world mourns the loss of a legend both on and off the court, we wanted to honor Kobe Bryant’s legacy in a significant way by sharing a rare moment when the famously private and professional star discussed his personal faith.

Around 2003, in a sit-down interview clip shared by Pastor Michael Todd, Bryant can be seen boldly declaring that “God is great.”

GOD IS GREAT

Referencing the 2003 media storm following the later dropped accusation of sexual assault against him, Bryant was asked, “What did you learn from that whole experience? Just having to go through what you went through.”

Bryant’s answer? Simply and perfectly, “God is great.”

When asked if he always knew that God was good before the incidents of 2003, Bryant gave a true glimpse into the heart of a man who understood the grace, support and love that Christ promises is available to all.

It’s then that, with evident conviction behind his words, a quiver in his voice and the hint of tears in his eyes, that Bryant declared, “You can know [that God is great] all you want, but until you have to pick up that cross that you can’t carry and He picks it up for you and carries you and the cross, then you know.”

This clip, these words, that heart is the most beautiful part of Bryant’s legacy that I will remember forever.
