We’ve always loved Keanu Reeves, but his career is particularly hot at the moment. He won us over in his 1990’s blockbuster films like The Matrix and Speed. However, he has had an impressive aura around him in recent months, lending his talents to films like Toy Story 4 and Always Be My Maybe, as well as making a massive impression at E3, “stealing the show” as many in attendance declared.
Keanu Reeves the Philanthropist
What you may not know about Reeves, who is one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors, is that he has been secretly funding children’s hospitals across America for years now. In a 2009 interview with Ladies Home Journal, Reeves explained, “I have a private foundation that’s been running for five or six years, and it helps aid a couple of children’s hospitals and cancer research. I don’t like to attach my name to it; I just let the foundation do what it does.”
It’s impossible to know the motivating factors behind Reeves’ philanthropy, but he has endured far more heartbreak than you may expect, including the 1999 stillborn death of his daughter and subsequent divorce from his wife Jennifer Smye, who then tragically passed away in a car accident only two years later. Additionally, his sister has survived leukemia, and he seems to have a particular heart to help those impacted by cancer. He reportedly was particularly generous with his earnings from The Matrix, donating 70% of his income to support hospitals which specialize in treating leukemia.
In Matthew 6:3-4 we read that “when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,” Keanu Reeves is embodying Jesus’ commandment through his actions, donating to help those in need without worrying about getting credit for his generosity. For Reeves, the outcomes matter far more than the accolades.
“I have a private foundation that’s been running for five or six years, and it helps aid a couple of children’s hospitals and cancer research. I don’t like to attach my name to it; I just let the foundation do what it does.”
We suspect that Reeves’ generosity expands beyond what he’s alluded to in the 2009 Ladies Home Journal interview. However, he has supported charitable causes publicly on occasion, including multiple televised appearances on the Stand Up To Cancer broadcast to help the charity fund its breakthrough cancer research.
A True Gentleman
In recent months, fans have been delighted to uncover various discreet ways that Reeves works to be a “good guy.” In addition to spilling Reeves’ secret that he runs a foundation to help fund children’s hospitals and cancer research, they also recently discovered another way that Reeves acts with respect.
He works tirelessly to never touch women in a way that may make them uncomfortable. Fans have dubbed this his “no touching” policy. When photographed with women, he puts his hands near their waist but doesn’t actually touch them. Additionally, on the red carpet, he keeps his hands in his pockets or visible so that no one ever feels uncomfortable in his presence.
The more we discover about Reeves intentionality and care for those around him, the more we respect him.
