Have you ever wanted to know more about the life of your favorite LOTR author J.R.R. Tolkien? Well now is your chance to get to know the acclaimed twentieth-century fantasy writer. The new movie Tolkien is set to hit theaters this May.
Tolkien fought in World War I as a young man, the things he experienced influenced his fantastical writing heavily. From his time at war, he had a tight group of comrades that are said to have inspired the concept of “The fellowship” which resonates throughout his books. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings sagas, which exemplify themes of love, courage, self-sacrifice and friendship.
Tolkien is considered the “father” of modern fantasy literature. Amongst his comrades is C.S. Lewis, the author of The Chronicles of Narnia. Though Tolkien denied that the Lord of the Rings had biblical allegories in it, he was a man of faith. He believed that even myths could hide fundamental truths that were consistent with Christianity. He did criticize Lewis a bit for being so blatant with his Christian allegories throughout Narnia.
Tolkien is said to have been instrumental in leading Lewis from atheism to Christianity.
Tolkien being a devout Catholic himself, was a bit dismayed when his friend chose to join the Church of England instead. When asked what the purpose of life was, Tolkien responded “[i]t may be said that the chief purpose of life, for any one of us, is to increase according to our capacity our knowledge of God by all the means we have, and to be moved by it to praise and thanks.”
