Recently Ravi Zacharias and Abdu Murray were asked “What entitles us to believe that Christian faith is the exclusive means to truth” at an Open Forum at Yale. It’s a valid question, one that even the most mature Christian might be tempted to ask from time to time.
Even more important, it’s a question that Jesus isn’t afraid of. He wants us to ask it and He wants us to decide where we stand on it, for its a foundational block to your relationship with Him. So what does entitle us to believe that Jesus is the only way, the only truth and the only life?
The birth, death and resurrection of Jesus—prophesied, predicted, exactly fulfilled—He gives you answers that no other world view does.
Zacharias affirms the question, agreeing that it is one of the most important questions that Christians need to ask and determine. After expertly mapping out the various religious and world views available, along with their overlaps and lack of exclusivity and superiority, Zacharias clarifies that any world view is a set of lenses that we analyze the world through. He states that any world view is framed by answering the questions of:
So, then, ‘Why is it that Jesus Christ is so exclusive and unique?’
Zacharias answers, “[If] you go back across the Old Testament you have about 40 plus books … 66 books [in total], [written by] 40 different authors… They all point towards the following reality, that the problem with humanity is not outside of ourselves. The problem with humanity is inside of ourselves. Your heart and my heart is desperately wicked … We have lost the purpose for which we were created … The purpose God has created for you and me is that relationship with Him—that commune with Him. And when He says that the greatest commandment—out of 613 laws given … ‘that you should love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and all your mind and all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two laws hang all of the prophets and all of the commandments … you do not get that imperative and that intrinsic worth from any other world view.”
In short, no other world view answers the evil in the world with justice, love and forgiveness. But Jesus does! He answers this all in through His life, death and resurrection. No other world can claim the same. No other world view can reestablish through grace alone, choosing to love thy neighbors as themselves.
We are to love the Lord with all our heart, might and mind—for we are made in His image. And we are to love thy neighbor as yourself—for that is how He loves, relentless and without weariness. “No other world view will give you correspondingly true and coherent answers to the questions of origin, meaning, morality and destiny. Your intrinsic worth and your neighbor’s intrinsic worth…” Only Jesus can do that. Only Christianity can do that.
“The birth, death and resurrection of Jesus—prophesied, predicted, exactly fulfilled—He gives you answers that no other world view does. That’s why it’s fundamentally different and at best only superficially similar. I urge you to take the gospel of John and read it and you will see the answers to that.”
