A world-famous heavy metal rock star isn’t who you’d immediately picture as a social media messenger from God, but that’s exactly who Austin Carlile is.
Carlile, the former frontman for heavy metal band “Of Mice and Men” has turned his once alcohol and drug-infused life around. He’s now using his fame to preach the Word of God to fans and followers on Twitter and elsewhere.
His bold tweets include directly sharing the Gospel, declaring the Biblical truth that accepting Jesus is the only thing one needs to do in order to inherit eternal life.
Carlile is participating in speaking engagements with groups like “The Whosoevers,” which exists to sharing empowering, Christ-centered messages with students across the country.
It’s clear Carlile’s new found life in Christ has become his new mission, after he says he abandoned God for more than ten years:
“I turned my back on Christ at 17… followed by 10 years of alcoholism, drug use and loads of promiscuous sex and literally running away from God and doing all I could to separate myself from him. My story is radical, but so is His love, mercy and forgiveness.”
Though confident in pushing forward with his message, Carlile has said he loses followers when he speaks about God on social media. He clearly has a few big name fans, though, as recently legendary singer Chaka Khan sent some encouraging love to him through Twitter.

Last year, Rolling Stone profiled Carlile when he began speaking out about a life-threatening medical condition he has known as Marfan Syndrome. He credits his relationship with God for keeping him strong in the face of the disease that actually killed his mother, saying this:
“Honestly, if I didn’t have my personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I wouldn’t be able to do this. When my mother died, I was SO angry at him and fell away from my faith… it took years of Him pulling me back into His loving arms… I was miserable without Him.”
God has given Carlile an awesome platform and it appears he’s determined to the make the most of it.
