Hank Fortener’s upbringing in a large family of adopted children gave him personal insight into how beautiful the adoption process can be for all involved. This video showcases Hank’s work through an organization he founded in 2012 called AdoptTogether, which works to connect adoptive families to resources and support.
AdoptTogether’s goal is to create a world where there is a family for every child. The process of adoption can take a financial toll, but AdoptTogether serves as a crowdfunding platform to help ease this burden. Working to take the crowds in “crowdfunding” and instead pivot them into supportive communities, AdoptTogether hopes to help families find the resources and supportive long-term relationships needed to build a family. After all, it takes a village to raise a child.
Over the past five years, AdoptTogether has helped 2,200 families raise over $10 million. This includes legal fees, processing costs, plane tickets and many other things that we often don’t realize add up greatly.
In more recent years, AdoptTogether has worked to promote World Adoption Day each November. This social media campaign encourages people who are passionate about adoption to draw a smiley face on their palm and post an image of their hand as a means to raise awareness and funds. Galvanizing participation from folks like Ellen DeGeneres, Connie Britton and Shaquille O’Neal, World Adoption Day has now reached a viral level for sharing a message of hope to the masses.
