Have you ever felt directionless? Like you don’t know where to go or what to do? Actor and comedian Chris Rock has some great advice for you.

In an interview with Oprah, Rock was asked for the best life advice he could give someone. He said:

“I’d always end up broken down on the highway. When I stood there trying to flag someone down, nobody stopped. But when I pushed my own car, other drivers would get out and push with me. If you want help, help yourself—people like to see that.”

In other words, when you feel like your life is broken down and you don’t know where to go or what to do, there is always at least one thing you can do.

Even when you don’t feel like you have help, you always have hope. And when you act on that hope, help often comes with it.

You can do what’s in front of you. You can do the next right thing.

I can relate to that feeling of being stuck and directionless. A few years ago I was on tour with a worship band. We traveled across the US with a big youth conference leading thousands of teenagers in worship every weekend.

Then one day it all came to an end. Tour was over and it was time to move on.

I went from being a part of something that was really making a difference, to taking an eight to five sales job that I hated.

I was stuck. I had no sense of direction and I didn’t know what to do next. So I just waited around for another opportunity to fall into my lap. And I quickly realized that wishing for things to get better doesn’t work. That’s why I love this quote from Chris Rock.

You can do what’s in front of you. You can do the next right thing.

When you find yourself in a tough spot, it’s easy to get discouraged and frustrated. You feel like giving up, you feel like you deserve better, and more than anything, you just feel stuck and out of options. While these feelings are valid, you have to remember that there is always a way out. But sometimes that means you have to get out of the car and start pushing.

That’s what I had to do. I finally stopped waiting for an opportunity to fall into my lap, and instead, I went out and found one. I started writing.

At times it was exciting and at times it was discouraging and frustrating. But I stayed consistent. And within a year I was getting opportunities I would never have imagined. I was writing for different publications. I was asked to do an interview on a podcast. I even started getting paid to write.

Sometimes you feel like you just need a little help. You need someone to believe in you and give you an opportunity. And unfortunately, the help you need isn’t always available.

But even when you don’t feel like you have help, you always have hope. And when you act on that hope, help often comes with it. When you choose to get out and start pushing, you’ll be amazed at who will come alongside you.

Don’t give up. Keep going. Get out and push if you have to, but don’t give up.
