Jade and Wesley Ewoldt were 16 weeks pregnant when their twins received a devastating diagnosis. Now, the youngest babies ever born in Iowa are miraculously thriving!

Jade and Wesley Ewoldt were 16 weeks pregnant when their twins were diagnosed with a rare condition where identical twins share a placenta.

Five weeks later, the babies were born—18 weeks early, two of the youngest babies ever born at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Each about the length of a dollar bill, with underdeveloped skin, eyelids and lungs.

Having overcome many odds, the twins are now about 4 pounds each, no longer intubated but still remain in the hospital.

The Ewoldt family is taking it one day at a time and staying optimistic, proud of their little girls’ strength and progress.

“It’s overwhelming when you think about these things. So much goes into making sure these two little girls stay alive.”
