The meaning of family.
You can’t choose your immediate family and sometimes it’s the people we love the most that really know how to push our buttons. Regardless, at the end of the day, those are the people we should be able to depend on when we need a shoulder to cry on or someone to celebrate with.

In this episode of Truthmark, poet Aaron White and his wife, Viergeni White, reflect on the importance of the family that you do get to choose. Together, which each playing their own part, they take on the challenges and joys of marriage and starting a family of their own.

“[You’re] on the beat and I’m on the rhyme,” Viergeni says rhythmically. And this idea is so important: Aaron, who is usually the one busting rhymes, brings the background beat in this video as Viergeni shares her own heart about family. In everyday life, circumstances are always changing, getting switched up without a moment’s notice; in order to stay connected, Viergeni and Aaron must depend on each other to be adaptable and supportive, willing to assume new roles for what each new day demands.

Because, when it comes down to it, they are all each other really has. They’re not perfect, Viergeni readily admits, but she realizes something even more transcending:

“[We’re] all we got while [we’re] on the surface.”

Referring to the surface of the earth, Viergeni paints a beautiful picture of love, support and resilience. Starting a family is more than just “claim[ing] the same last name,” though that is a symbol of unity; what really matters is where the rubber meets the road: teamwork, as they demonstrate in lyrical and musical form.
