Happiness is life’s great motivator. We spend so much of our time and energy on earth looking for what will make us happy, but as poet Aaron White learned, that’s a misguided endeavor.

Aaron starts this episode of Truthmark by explaining how and where most people look for happiness, in things. There’s a multi-billion-dollar machine of ads that bombard us with that message every day, so it’s no wonder. We crush ourselves with comparisons, always looking for the newer, better, thing because surely it will bring us happiness this time. We forget that it hasn’t worked up to this point, yet still, we try.

The next stop in the happiness chase is accomplishments or careers. If I can just get that promotion or hit that milestone, surely happiness will be waiting for me. That too, is wrong. A Yale University study showed that most people said they would need to make 10% more money to be happier, no matter how much they earned. Just 10%! The problem is, it’s ALWAYS 10%. Happiness is just out of reach, never quite there.

If it’s not things or money or a career, surely happiness can be found in another person. Someone else can come into your life and make you happy, right? This chase is as misguided as the rest. You alone are responsible for your happiness, and if you put that responsibility on someone else, you’re bound to be disappointed or worse, resentful.

The point is, chasing happiness is a losing game. Aaron White says it best in his performance, Living in the Now. “Until you get rid of the idea that happiness is somewhere else, it’ll never be where you are.”

Check out Aaron’s inspiring message in the video above and tell us your key to living in the now.
