A Life-Changing Accident Helped This Woman Redefine Beauty

A life-changing accident gives a young fashion model new perspective about what is worthwhile in life and the true meaning of beauty.

“Your story is just so much more beautiful than your outward appearance.”

While former model Lauren Scruggs Kennedy speaks those words honestly and with full conviction, she also admits that she didn’t always believe them—and that for a long time, she found her worth in the reflection of a mirror.

In a terrible accident, an airplane propeller sliced Lauren’s face, shoulder and left hand. Suddenly her worth, so often grounded in her physical beauty, was challenged. Mercifully, as her recovery progressed, she found the truer, better reflection she had been searching for all along. “After my accident I realized, ‘I don’t feel beautiful right now,’” Lauren explains, “and it actually doesn’t matter…that’s not what should define me.”

She had lost her arm, one of her eyes and her status as a model—however, in the midst of all this loss, Lauren’s heart was experiencing a change and, ultimately, a revelation. “How you’re serving people, how you’re using your story to encourage others,” is what she now says displays a richer kind of beauty, one no mirror can take away.

Although those words are easy to say, for many they are not always as easy to believe—a truth women know all too well.

“We constantly have things pouring into us that say ‘Be more beautiful’… it’s so easy to solely focus on outward.” Which is why the search inward becomes all the more important. Though Lauren’s story is unique, she demonstrates what all of us have the ability to be: vessels for more. When we go beyond the surface, we fully dive into the life we were created to live.

So what is beauty? Lauren walks along the beach wearing a prosthetic arm, head held high and a joyful smile spread across her once-wounded face, and there is no denying that she evokes a stunning and confident beauty. What does beauty mean to Lauren? “Beauty is fearlessness. Beauty is trust. Beauty is love. Beauty is…”
