Stop Nursing and Rehearsing the Negative—Jumpstart Your Joy!

We all find ourselves down in the dumps from time to time. But author Michelle McKinney Hammond wants to help you ditch the doldrums and get the joy back in life.

As much as we wish we could promise you life-long, uninterrupted happiness, we just can’t. Seasons of sadness are inevitable. But it doesn’t have to end there. Joy can be found even in times of depression; don’t lose hope. In this video, we get to hear from Michelle McKinney Hammond, who shares with us how we can jumpstart the process of finding that joy.

We need joy in our lives because it gives us strength, Michelle tells us. And more importantly, “It affects your ability to move forward in life.” Before we know it, we can be stuck in a rut of sadness and it’s joy that’s going to help us get back on our feet.

The first step is to embrace the pain so that you can release it. It’s important to allow yourself to feel the fullness of your pain instead of pushing it down or bottling it up. That way, you can release it.

Simply put by Michelle: “Stop nursing and rehearsing the negative that happened in your life.” Dwelling on it won’t change the situation. In fact, it can make it worse. Talking about it over and over again only makes us more upset, Michelle says.

Next, we must let it go. Do the hard work of finding the good in the situation or discovering the lesson to be learned. Once you find it, remind yourself of it often, especially when you feel yourself slipping into the rehashing and recounting of the issue.

The glimmer of hope that you can find in a negative situation is a huge step towards joy; “Cling to it and confess it,” Michelle advises.

But the real secret for long lasting joy? We’ll let Michelle fill you in on that one. Watch the video above to find out!
