Everyone deserves a loving grandpa—especially the adorable kitties at the Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary. Terry Lauerman, a retiree who began coming into the sanctuary to pet and brush the cats soon became known as "cat grandpa."

Terry Lauerman likes cats, and the Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary, in Green Bay, is happy he does. The 75-year-old retiree started coming into the shelter to pet and brush the cats.

The non-profit’s manager shared, “Terry started coming here, we noticed him because he brought his own brush. And he would sit next to the cats on the couch and just brush for hours, and he would fall asleep. That just became what he did every day—he slept with the cats on accident.”

A shelter employee captured Terry’s catnaps on a cell phone and from there a Facebook post about Terry was shared more than 26,000 times!

Terry and his feline friends quickly became local celebrities, “Well, I was very surprised by the notoriety that happened. People from all over the world have been emailing me and sending articles about me and so forth. So, it’s quite a surprise, to say the least.”

Safe Haven’s Pet Sanctuary’s manager said, “It was crazy for a while. Everyone was coming in to see Terry, but it also created a lot of traffic, adoptions and donations. Because we are a non-profit organization, so, it really helped us out a lot.”

Retirement can take many forms. Terry says his purr-fect!
