Artist and activist, Propaganda offers a hopeful perspective for anyone who's experiencing hardship. He knows well that your surroundings don't define you.

Meet Propaganda, hip hop artist and activist. He sat down with us to talk about overcoming adversity, finding perspective within it and ultimately coming out on the other side knowing our purpose.

Growing up in the inner-city, Propaganda talks about the fortitude that is a part of struggling. When he sees a kid from “a hood down the street” succeed, “[he] can cheer that kid on because [he] know[s] what it took to get there,” he says.

For him, even after he was established as a performer and on tour, his perspective on success was still constantly shifting. He shares about a show that was added to a tour that ended up having an unusually low attendance. This was incredibly hard for him.

“As an artist, your worth is quantified by how many tickets and albums you sell,” he confesses. “I just saw my worth,” he continues, “and it was…twelve.”

That was when he realized he needed to shift his perspective off what he was lacking and onto what he still had in his life: “I’m still a dad,…still a husband.” Once he reminded himself of those two things that were still true, he was able to admit to himself, “I think I’ll be alright.”

Propaganda firmly believes that each of us is supposed to live each day with purpose. Sometimes, it can be difficult to see how something we are going through could have a purpose in our life, but he assures us with great emphasis that “[w]hatever you’re going through right now is not a waste.”

“The narrative isn’t done,” he declares.
