DAY 16—Forgiveness Could Be the Key You’re Looking For

There's no better time than Christmas to give the gift of forgiveness. Author Michelle McKinney Hammond lays down key advice on how to forgive well so you can be well.

DAY 16 of “It’s a DeLIGHTful 25 Days of Christmas”

Sometimes we just need the reminder that everyone else is just as human as we are. Delivering that reminder to us today is Michelle McKinney Hammond; she’s here to help us through the practice of forgiveness—something that everyone, at some point, will need to both give and receive.

Underneath the surface, the necessity of forgiveness is founded upon two realities: people will hurt you and people will fail you.

“They’re only human,” Michelle explains. On the flip side of this truth is the fact that we ourselves, despite our best intentions, will hurt and fail those that we love as well. Knowing this, we should practice showing grace and understanding to others and ourselves.

“Expectations are resentment waiting to happen,” Michelle shares.

Instead, what if we practiced giving people the benefit of the doubt and not assuming the worst? Michelle challenges us to approach the situation with this perspective:

“People who love you don’t hurt you on purpose. People who don’t know you are usually distracted by their own pain.” Just let that sink in for a moment.

Whether we realize it or not, harboring resentment and unwillingness to forgive affects our own heart just as much, if not more, as it affects the other person. So let’s live freely. For more advice on how to release yourself from the pain inflicted on you by others, check out this video above.
