Did You Know You Can Volunteer to Cuddle Babies?

When babies are born premature, parents can't always be there to hold them. Thanks to these special volunteers, there's always enough love to go around.

Love is always needed in greater supply. Luckily, there are some special volunteers offering up theirs to the littlest who need it most.

“Finding out I was in labor at 25 weeks was terrifying, because you know that baby is far from being developed and ready to be born,” says one mother of a baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Though her job is flexible, she’s unable to be at the hospital around the clock holding her newborn as much as she’d like.

Her struggle is a common one for parents of premature babies, who require extra support and are often unable to leave the hospital for several weeks following birth.

“She was born three and a half months early; she’s cold and getting poked and prodded constantly,” this same mother continues, “the fact that she can associate touch with a positive reinforcement is incredible.”

“When the babies are fussing, I get to go in and I get to cuddle with them,” says volunteer Karen of her role with The Cuddling Program. “I find myself praying for them a lot… Life is hard; these little babies are struggling just to stay alive. I can’t help but just sit and stare at them and hope their life turns out good.”

Bridging the gap between nurturing parent and care-taking medical staff, volunteer cuddlers with The Cuddling Program simply offer what they can when mom or dad isn’t available—a gentle embrace, a soothing touch and love. Lots of it.

“You get attached. She had a piece of my heart,” says George, another volunteer, of a preemie he cuddled for several days. “And she always will.”
