What does it mean to care for your soul? The Get Read panel discusses Judah Smith's practical and refreshingly funny guide to caring for it well in "How's Your Soul?"

Today on Get Read, our host and panel are discussing a book that is fueling change in today’s world: “How’s Your Soul?” by Judah Smith. This book, centered on helping people find stability by focusing on the health of their soul, raised a lot of questions and unique reflections for the members of our panel.

First, each of them had to dig deeper into what exactly the idea of “the soul” means for them. Television personality, Britt Nilsson, who confessed to normally feeling confused after reading about distinctions between the body and the soul, appreciated how simple and practical Judah’s writing was.

“It’s your insides,” she says. “How connected are you to what made [you]?”

Kutter Callaway, author and educator, articulates that “we are bodies that are animated by God’s breath.”

Sometimes, we assume that because life is going well, our souls are in good condition as well. Our host, Sonia Alcazar Collier, shares that this book helped to remind her that this wasn’t necessarily true. “On a daily basis,” she says, “we forget to check in sometimes.” We’re missing an essential step in taking care of our souls.

Propaganda agrees, noting that, as humans, we tend to focus on outside objects and circumstances to assess how we are doing: “Objects haven’t made us happy, money hasn’t made us happy; that’s the problem…We’re still working on outside stuff.” But it’s the inward look that Judah Smith hopes to help readers cultivate. Until we look into our true selves, we cannot assess the health of our soul.

The final takeaway? “This is a book about the real you,” is how Propaganda sums it up and the rest of the panel agrees. “How’s Your Soul” is about getting deeper in touch with who God made us to be and learning how to be the healthiest version of ourselves.
