“When you walk to the edge of all the light you have, And take that first step into the darkness of the unknown, You must believe one of two things will happen: There will be something solid for you to stand upon, Or, you will be taught how to fly.” —Patrick Overton

The story from “Box of Butterflies” that I share with you today is about my Father and a gift he gave me.

When I think of my Dad, I can see that, throughout my life, he was always trying to give me wings to fly so I could go anywhere I wanted. He told me over and over that my education would be my passport, and that I needed to work hard in school so I could go to college. My father was always incredibly supportive of my artistic endeavors, and when the time came to interview for college, he even came with me and sat in the waiting area.

Always look into the night sky, and you’ll be reminded of how much I love you. I’ll leave a message for you in the moon.

As I was preparing to leave Ireland for school in England, I began to feel anxious. I had never been away from home before. This was before the Internet and cellphones and the idea of being so far away from my father, with no way of immediately reaching him, made me extremely nervous.

One night, just a few days before I was scheduled to leave, he took me outside to the backyard—a clear night lay before us, with a full moon floating high in the sky. My father said to me, “Roma, wherever you are in the world, that moon will be shining  down on you.”

“So, whenever you feel alone,” he continued, “Always look into the night sky, and you’ll be reminded of how much I love you. I’ll leave a message for you in the moon.” As that first full moon ascended once I had settled in England, I went outside and looked up at the moon. Immediately, I felt the great comfort of my dad’s love, he had left his message of love there and I could feel it in spite of the distance between us.

The moon has been a beautiful comfort to me all these years. And now I’ve shared this same message of love with my children.

The moon, though it can shine so brightly, has no true light source of its own; it simply reflects the sun. I love the idea that, when we send messages of love to the moon, in return, the moon does what it does best: it reflects those messages to our loved ones.

My book, “Box of Butterflies,” is full of heartwarming stories much like this one. Each grace-filled chapter covers topics such as courage, strength, gratitude, love and kindness—”Box of Butterflies” is deeply personal to me, just as the story I share in this video is, and I pray that it will uplift you and be a comfort to you or someone you love.
