Whether you're with family, friends or that romantic love, here are some tips on how to celebrate from our friend Dr. Henry Cloud.

What is Valentine’s day? It’s a great celebration of love! All kinds of love: family, friends, buddies. But you know what we’re really talking about here. It’s the cupid love, that romantic love.

In this episode of Light Advice, we hear from Dr. Henry Cloud on issues of the heart. Dr. Cloud is the best-selling author of Boundaries and many other wonderful books that promote better communication, deeper relationships and healthier workplaces. Today, Dr. Cloud gives us great advice to ensure that this year’s Valentine’s Day proves to be a joy-filled holiday.

Regardless of if you’re coupled or single, Valentine’s Day may likely send a shiver of anxiety down your spine. The holiday is loaded with expectations of how people believe the day should go. When your expectations aren’t met… When things don’t happen the way you think they should… It’s incredibly easy to find yourself wallowing in disappointment. Dr. Cloud explains that everyone will find themselves in one of three groups this Valentine’s Day: “You’re either in a relationship that’s going really really well, or you’re in a relationship that’s not going so great, or you’re not in a relationship this Valentine’s Day.” The reality is that for people in each group, it’s easy to experience disappointment on February 14.

Dr. Cloud’s core message is that unmet expectations can be averted through proactive communication and a clear plan. He wants you to “plan something. Get active about it. I want to make sure that this Valentine’s Day doesn’t disappoint you.” Check out this video because Dr. Cloud’s specific recommendations for each group prove to be very helpful and grounded. Happy Valentine’s Day!
