Today in the United States, approximately 40% of new entrepreneurs are female. There’s still work to be done to level the playing field for true equality for female entrepreneurs, but the amazing opportunities for today’s young businesswomen come on the backs of the bravery of the savvy women who paved the path before them.

In this episode of In My Day, we are invited into an inspiring conversation between Eryn Erickson and her grandmother, Joyce Eddy. Eryn works to run her fashion company called “So Worth Loving” and credits her grandmother’s entrepreneurial spirit as her inspiration.

Forty-five years ago, Joyce opened an antique store as a single mom to support her family. She recalls one of her most innovative business deals.

“There was a warehouse in town that changed over from the wooden spools to plastic. So, they were getting rid of all the wooden spools. I asked them if I could buy them and they said, ‘Yes, you can buy them for two cents a piece.’ We made towel bars and chandeliers and sconces and chamber sticks and bookends… You name it, everything we could think of!”

“And people thought I was crazy,” Joyce continues. “‘What are you going to do when this doesn’t sell?’ They didn’t have confidence at all. I just knew it would for some reason. I loved it, so I thought, ‘Well, I can’t be all that wrong.’” And boy was she right, they sold in buckets!

The younger generation is wise to learn the lessons their elders have to offer. Watch this video for an inspirational message of how an inter-generational confidence can empower an entire family’s success.
