No one ever expects to be in a situation where your next meal is in question, let alone the clothes on your back or your next pair of shoes. But it’s often through the most practical of needs that our eyes are opened to the helpers around us. You might even call them angels, if you can spot them.

Thankfully, Angels of God, a charitable New Jersey-based clothing closet is easy to find. Located in a bright pink house with cheery trim and a friendly façade, Angels of God was founded by Katelyn Darrow in 2009 when she was just 12 years old to provide free clothing, food and more to those in need.

“My family and I went through a great deal of struggle,” says Katelyn. “We went through a house fire and we also experienced domestic violence. I just remember so many people came together and helped us.”

Being on the receiving end of so much support motivated Katelyn to do the same for others. Though she started Angels of God to meet material needs, it’s evident through the stories of those impacted by her “closet,” her open door offers welcome balm for weary and isolated souls.

“They make it feel really easy and welcoming,” explains Christa, a young mother and client of Angels of God. “If you call them, they always help. No matter what. They don’t make it seem like it’s a job.”

For these angels, it’s evident: This work is not a job. Clearly, it’s all about the connecting and spreading of joy.

Watch the joy Angels of God brings to their community in the latest episode of The Golden Rule above.
