The Edge Shares the Path to Great Ideas

Great ideas come from great failures. U2's The Edge talks about how their world-renowned band found success by learning from failures and one another.

Great ideas take work. If there’s anyone that understands this, it’s Grammy Award-winning musician The Edge, member of U2. In this video, he shares his perspective on the benefits of failure and the importance of asking for help amidst the process.

“One of the biggest threats to our band has been success and [the] complacency that can come with that,” he admits. Once you’ve made it, it’s easy to sit back and take for granted all of the hard work that it took to get where you are. But in order to stay in a place of consistent achievement, you have to keep moving forward in constant pursuit of the “new.”

And sometimes, that includes failure. But it’s all about how you fail, The Edge shares. He reflects on something Samuel Beckett said: “Fail better.” The more you fail, the better you become at getting back up and learning from the situation.

We need our support system to come around us when we do fail. For Edge, that support is his other bandmates. Creating a culture of accepting and giving help, the band has been able to distinguish between great ideas and ideas that are just stepping stones to the great ones.

“One out of every five ideas is a great one,” The Edge says. The band meets the other four ideas with an openness to admitting that they can do better and then begin the process all over again to reach the breakthrough.

When that breakthrough is achieved, a certain power comes with it. Music has this power embedded in it beyond explanation; it just is. We’re thankful for those who make the music that gives our feelings a melody. To hear more from The Edge about the driving force behind U2’s music, check out the video above.
