Feel like you're living in a cycle of disappointment? Michelle McKinney Hammond offers some no-nonsense advice on how to get past life's disappointing moments.


No matter how hard we try not to, as humans, we always seem to have expectations, hopes and plans. And often, we experience the feeling of being let down. If we’re not careful, we can let the fear of being let down get in the way of taking full advantage of what life has to offer. In today’s latest episode of Tough by Fair, we hear from Michelle McKinney Hammond on an issue of the heart: disappointment. How do we get past it?

“Whatever the emotion is, let it speak to you about what your true needs are,” Michelle says. This is the first step in letting go of disappointment. When something doesn’t go the way you envisioned, own your feelings, whether you feel violated, sad or angry.

Next, you need to locate what you really want. What is the source of your disappointment? Try to narrow down the underlying issue that caused you to feel the way you do. Michelle reminds us that disappointment is a cycle: “If you don’t know what you’re looking for, you’ll keep picking the wrong things.”

Lastly, Michelle instructs us to get rid of the idols. By idols, she means our “insistence on the way life should be.” When we’re focused on what we think should happen, we don’t see all of the options in front of us.
