The beautiful butterfly has always seemed like a sign from God in my life, reminding me that even though we may feel alone, we are not—God is always there, loving us.

Life can be filled with loss, and when I was only ten years old, my beloved mother died unexpectedly. Not long after she passed, I went with my dad to visit her gravesite. And as we stood on the hillside praying, a little butterfly flew right in front of us and my father said, “Would you look there—that wee butterfly could be your mother’s spirit.” As a child, the idea that a beautiful butterfly could represent my precious mother gave me great comfort.

Over the course of my life, I have seen butterflies appear in all sorts of unexpected places. On the side of a truck on a rainy day, on a billboard during a long mountain drive, in a thoughtful gift from my husband or even in a piece of jewelry. Whenever I’ve needed a sign of hope, there seemed to always be a butterfly close by to serve as a reminder of God’s love.

“Box of Butterflies” is a deeply personal book that shares stories from my life, alongside quotes, poems, scripture and artwork that I pray will uplift you as they have me. Each grace-filled chapter covers topics such as courage, strength, gratitude, love and kindness.

Whenever I’ve needed a sign of hope, there seemed to always be a butterfly close by to serve as a reminder of God’s love.

The story from “Box of Butterflies” that I share with you today is about my mother’s “Good Room.” As a young girl, this special room is where my mother kept a tiny locked cabinet filled with her wedding china and other precious items. I still remember watching her lovingly take out a little cup and saucer, gently holding it in her hands before putting it back in the cabinet, unused—it was to be kept only for “special occasions.”

But one day, a heavy British military vehicle rattled down our street in Northern Ireland, and we heard a heartbreaking crashing sound come from this special room. My mother ran down the hallway and gasped when she saw what had happened.

The rest of the story can be seen in the video above—it’s truly one that reminds me of all the blessings in our lives and the importance of sharing the things we want to lock up in the “good room” of our hearts. After all, should our most treasured gifts really remain hidden? Or are we meant to throw open the doors of our own “good rooms” to share these gifts with the world?

“Box of Butterflies” will be available for purchase on March 6, 2018. Visit boxofbutterflies.com to learn more about the book and pre-order your own copy.
