We all like a party, but if we’re honest, how many times do we go out of our way to find reasons to celebrate people and life?

It’s something that Brooklyn, one of our favorite vloggers, wants to challenge herself to do more: to spot the joy in anyone, any place, any day.

“Celebration says things like, ‘I like you, I enjoy being around you, I know you like being around me,’” she says. “It documents a memory for us, I can recall some of the best birthdays and honoring moments my friends have organized for me. Celebrating says, ‘Your community shows up for you.’ ”

And why wouldn’t we want to document memories like that? In a world that’s obsessed with bad news and sensationalized headlines, giving ourselves permission to celebrate can feel like a rebellious act—one we could probably stand to indulge in a little more often.

“I want to take the muscle—the very thin, flimsy muscle—of celebration and I want to stretch it,” Brooklyn continues. She uses the example of a wedding, pointing out how people don’t get married and then wait until their 50th anniversary to celebrate. They get to start celebrating right away, at the main event.

So why can’t we start doing more of the same?

Brooklyn grabs a handful of confetti.

“Guess what? I woke up on time today,” she says, tossing the confetti so that it glitters in the air.

What can you celebrate today? Watch the full celebration in Brooklyn’s latest from Welcome to Brooklyn above.
