Chip and Jo share their early marriage struggles, sage advice, and ways to persevere through hard times at Hubspot’s’ annual “Inbound” event. Be inspired by the couple’s joint story and adventures. What we love most about them is their groundedness and sense of humor through it all.
Joanna shares about the years before “Fixer Upper” when the couple fell upon relatable hard times. “Every Friday, we were saying, ‘Are we gonna make it?’ The four or five years before we did the show, when the housing crisis hit, things were so hard for us. We kept pressing through, even in those hard times.”
She continues, “The value of what we learned in that is something I’d never want to do again, but I’d never not want that. The hard is what makes us appreciate this.” Wise advice from this superstar couple that is now set to have a new cable network with Discovery Inc, set to launch the summer of 2020.
Speaking on how to find your passion, Joanna shares, “What I realized is I had to step out. I had to be curious. I had to become a learner. I had to learn that and with that came the passion,” she explains. It was a long road for Jo, as she navigated different careers before discovering her design passion working alongside Chip in the early years of their marriage.
Chip chimes in with great relationship advice for couples, “We definitely disagree. It’s not perfect. But for Jo and I, it really is a special bond we’re extremely proud of. We work really well together. Having respect is a huge part of their success. Solid mutual respect…A lot of hard work goes into this, but if you can get to a mutual place of respect, you can change the world.”
