8 Celebrity Couples Who Waited Until Marriage to Have Sex

Share:

More and more Hollywood couples are making known their personal decision to wait until marriage to have sex. Here are 8 couples who made that decision.

As studies show more and more Christians are choosing to engage in premarital sex, the population of couples choosing to abstain seems to shrink by the year. A study cited by Forbes reports that approximately 80% of unmarried evangelical young adults (18 to 29) say they are having sex.

It’s why it is all the more shocking when celebrity couples under the scrutiny of the public eye disclose their decision to practice celibacy in their relationships. The difficult journey only amplified by the pressures of fame, it’s a feat that cannot be underestimated. Here are 8 celebrity couples who abstained from sex while dating.

Justin Bieber + Hailey Baldwin Bieber

Earlier this year Justin Bieber shared in an interview with Vouge that he and now-wife Hailey Baldwin were celibate until their wedding night. As cited on People, Justin said: “God doesn’t ask us not to have sex for Him because He wants rules and stuff. He’s like, ‘I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain.’ I think sex can cause a lot of pain…I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul…and I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result.” He commented.

The couple who were previous friends reconnected at a conference hosted by Pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr. according to Refinery29. A few months later their relationship evolved to dating, which lead to the pair tying the knot in September of 2018.

Ciara + Russell Wilson

Singer Ciara and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson were very open about their call to celibacy in their dating life. In an interview with Access Hollywood, the couple described their decision to wait until marriage to have sex and the difficulties in that journey.

After marrying in July of 2016, they reflected on their experience telling E! News that while it was a “great challenge” to remain celibate, it “allowed us to continue to build our friendship.”

The two both acknowledge while there was great reward, it took a lot of time in prayer to see it through.

Julianne Hough + Brooks Laich

Julianne Hough shared her decision for celibacy in an interview with CosmoGIRL! in 2008.

People cites Hough saying: “I want to be with that special person,” she told the publication. “I think [the choice] to have sex before marriage is an individual one, but if you’re just with one person, it’s only for one good reason, and [waiting to have sex] will strengthen that relationship. I’m not trying to preach consequences here, but I think when you say no, down the line it will be a better decision.”

Devon Franklin + Meagan Good

Actress Meagan Good and Producer, Writer and Part-time Preacher Devon Franklin are not only vocal about their celibacy journey—they’ve shared countless stories and critical lessons learned in their book The Wait. Good and Franklin chose celibacy at different times in their life. Franklin had been celibate for nearly a decade when he and Good met, while Meagan was just shy of a year according to NBC. They believe sexual discipline leads to growth and achievement in countless levels in one’s personal life as profiled throughout The Wait.

Good shared with Parade in regards to their celibacy “I believe that it helps because the relationship wasn’t based on physicality and I think sometimes when that leads the relationship and that type of connection, I think sometimes you can’t really see clearly and you settle for things that you wouldn’t settle for during long term.”

Chance the Rapper + Kristen Corley

Chance the Rapper recently opened up about how his now-wife Kirsten Corley lead him to celibacy and eventually baptism saving his life. In an interview with Queen Radio Chance describes the meaning behind a song on his new album The Big Day:  “I explain that my wife literally saved my life by becoming celibate and going and getting baptized.”

The two who met as children were together for a period which resulted in the birth of their daughter. However, after being separated for years they rekindled their relationship and married just this summer. Rolling Out reports Chance and Kristen are now expecting a second child.

Tamara + Adam Housley

Actress and TV Personality Tamara Mowry met husband Adam Housley through a mutual connection—a professor they both studied under as students at Pepperdine University. Years later the couple wed in 2011.

Tamara shared with Ebony their choice to remain celibate was a directive from God. “We said, ‘it’s got to be God’s way and not our way.’…So our right way was the way we felt God wanted us to do it which was being celibate. We said to God, ‘This is who we are, I know you take us as we are, our faults, our fears, our joys, our hope as a couple and have your way.’”

She shared a bit of advice for couples going through the same journey now. “Whenever you’re feeling discouraged just pray together.”

Not long after she married her now-husband Mike Fisher in July 2010. The couple remains together and have two kids.
